Weaving Destiny – Ching-Yun Choir 50th Anniversary
JUN 10TH 2024 (MON) 14:30 / NATIONAL TAICHUNG THEATER
The Ching-Yun Choir(青韵合唱團), with its long history, is holding its first concert in Taichung. In the first half of the concert, there will be six new mixed-voice choral compositions. Composers Chen-Hui Jen(任真慧), Ching-Mei Lin,(林京美) Chung-Yuan Yu(余中元), and renowned Singaporean composer Zechariah Goh(吳多才) have each created works based on themes of love, life, and social environment from the “Book of Odes (Shi Jing).” Particularly noteworthy is Zechariah Goh’s use of vocal effects to create charming choruses reminiscent of ancient odes. The second half of the concert will feature past commissioned compositions.
Artistic director and conductor Cheng-Pu Chang(張成璞) stated that the choir aims to discover new interpretations within ancient texts. Although the “Book of Odes (Shi Jing)” dates back over two thousand years, its themes remain relevant to life. Explanations will be provided during the performance to help the audience better understand the content.
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Ching-Yun Choir will perform the commemorative piece “Music is the art of time,” a collaborative work by Chih-Ying Lay(賴志穎), the first prize winner of the Lin Rong-San Literature Award, and composer Chun-Da HUANG(黃俊達). This piece serves as a footnote to the half-century journey of the Ching-Yun Choir.
Originally founded by graduates of Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School and Taipei First Girls High School at National Taiwan University, the Ching-Yun Choir later began recruiting music-loving alumni. It has previously won the Taipei International Choral Competition and participated in events such as the TOLOSA Choral Contest and joint performances with the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Clever County Magistrate & Battle at ChangBanPo
JUN 21ST-23ND 2024 (FRI-SUN) / NATIONAL TAICHUNG THEATER
“The Romance of the Three Kingdoms” has always been a favorite traditional opera among theater enthusiasts. Hanjinkou(漢津口), the site of the famous battle where the Three Kingdoms general Yun Chao (Zi-Long Chao;趙雲) rose to fame, is the focus of the Peking opera “Battle at ChangBanPo (Long Slope Bridge, Hanjin Port)(長坂坡・漢津口)”. It tells the story of Yun Chao’s seven brave attempts to enter and exit Cao Cao(曹操)’s camp, single-handedly rescuing his lord, showcasing both his intelligence and bravery, which earned him the admiration of Cao Cao, who ordered Yun Chao to be captured.
Featuring a stellar cast and thrilling martial arts performances, “Changbanpo.Hanjinkou” includes a rare “flag-leaning(靠旗)” scene. The young martial artist Ting-fang HSU portrays a handsome appearance and will showcase his profound skills in singing, speaking, and combat. He will switch roles between Yun Chao in “Changbanpo” and Yu Guan(關羽) in “Hanjinkou”, challenging himself with a rapid 7-minute costume change.
Compared to the action-packed “Battle at ChangBanPo (Long Slope Bridge, Hanjin Port)” on Friday night, “The Clever County Magistrate(巧縣官)” will feature the “Three Clowns,” portraying characters with different personalities of wit, kindness, foolishness, tyranny, and cunning. Starring Chen-sin WANG(王辰鑫), specializing in clown roles, and directed by the renowned actor Ching-he Chen(陳清河), it is suitable for those new to Peking opera.
Both plays are produced jointly by TREND Education Foundation(趨勢基金會) and NTCPA(國立臺灣戲曲學院), with performances by the NTCPA’s Fu Hshing Jingju Opera Troupe(復興京劇團). “The Clever County Magistrate” will be performed on June 21st for one show only, while “Battle at ChangBanPo (Long Slope Bridge, Hanjin Port)” will have performances on June 22nd and 23rd.
